What is glued laminated timber?

       Glued laminated timber, also called glulam, is a type of structural engineered wood product comprising a number of layers of dimensioned lumber bonded together with durable, moisture-resistant structural adhesives. Easywood glued laminated timber  is used for the floor, roof and wall structures of solid wood in combination with steel, concrete, masonry, and hard stone and meets all current requirements forin the construction or renovation of existing buildings.

Calculation example:
Initial moisture = 12%

End humidity = 16%

Fire Resistance

       A glulam structure is much safer and can be more cost effective than an unprotected steel structure. When fire encases a glulam beam, a carbonized layer forms  around the structural core, which restricts the external supply of oxygen and heat and thus significantly impedes the subsequent burn-off. The burn-off rate of glulam is 0.7mm/min and therefore expensive fire protection coatings are normally not necessary. For practical use this means that without any surface protection and any additional provisions, laminated timber construction   

requiring a fire resistance of 30minutes, 60minutes and 90minutes is simple to achieve. When a surface spread of flame layer requires to be reduced, this can be solved by the application of a water based patented environmentally friendly product that is invisible to the naked eye.

Airtightness

    Air leakage through gaps in a building’s envelope can be caused by either the buoyancy effect of air or by the pressure differential created by wind blowing on a building. Typically both of these factors will influence the total rate of air leakage at a given point in time.

        Air tightness is not a mere nicety of energy saving construction, it is essential to avoid construction damage. Gaps in the construction will lead to substantial humidity transport by convection.

         Everybody who plans to build a new house is well advised to pay attention to the air tightness of the envelope construction. Fixing the problem after the house is built can be difficult and costly. Therefore, the implementation of each project pays great attention to this aspect.
